Four ways to acquire Serbian citizenship
The official portal lists four ways to acquire Serbian citizenship.[1]
- By descent
- By birth in Serbia
- By admission
- Under international treaties
Born abroad to a Serbian parent
A child born abroad acquires Serbian citizenship by descent if one parent is a Serbian citizen and the other is unknown, of unknown citizenship or stateless.[1]
If the other parent is a foreign citizen, the child acquires Serbian citizenship if the Serbian parent registers the child by the age of 18. A person over 18 in the same situation can still acquire citizenship if they apply for registration in the Register of citizens by the age of 23.[1]
When the link is a grandparent or an earlier ancestor
Cases that run through a grandparent or an earlier ancestor depend on the specific provisions that apply and, above all, on the records that can be found. We do not generalise about them: we review your documents and give you a written opinion on whether and how you may qualify.
Admission: the residence-based route
Admission is a separate route for foreigners living in Serbia. The official portal lists, among its conditions: permission for permanent residence with registered residence for at least three consecutive years, being at least 18 years old, release from foreign citizenship or proof that you will be released, and a written statement that you consider Serbia your state.[1]
Foreign spouses of Serbian citizens may apply after at least three years of marriage, holding permanent residence, with a written statement.[1]
Documents that matter
A parent-route case starts from documents showing that your parent is or was a Serbian citizen. When the link is a grandparent or an earlier ancestor, those records often have to be retrieved from archives first. We confirm the exact list for your case once we have reviewed what you already hold.
Foreign documents often need translation and an apostille or legalisation. Which ones, and in what form, depends on where they were issued.
When records are missing
Records can be incomplete, held in different archives, or recorded under older place names. Research can often fill the gaps, but not always. We plan research in capped blocks and report after each one, so you can decide with full information.
